Curl Talk: Some Care and Product Recommendations

Deborah of Vintage Soul posted this comment

What is your hair texture? It looks pretty soft to me and so does your daughter. My son has hair like mine - really thick dense hair. We blow dry and twist his hair every three weeks or so. Can you tell me if the Bee Naturals would work for him. If you visit my blog and look at this post you will see a picture of his hair. http://debsvintagesoul.blogspot.com/2010/02/embrace.html. His hair is never soft and is always a ten hour project to do. I use Nexus products in it now but I would some recommendations.

Hi, Deborah, my hair texture is probably about a 3c.  My daughter's is about the same. We both have very defined curls but my daughter's hair is a bit thicker and tangles much easier.  Like I said doing her hair is an emotional process because it takes time to detangle and it can be painful for her.

I wash and condition my hair weekly and I wash and condition my daughter's hair biweekly.  I would say both of us have soft hair but it can get thirsty.  I rinse my hair almost daily so the water can dry it out.  I usually add a small drop of grapeseed oil every other day to perk it up.  I add a bit of carrot oil to my daughter's hair weekly.  I think this helps to keep it moisturized.  Moisture is the key to keeping it soft.

Things I would suggest for your son?  I'm no hair dresser but here's my thoughts:

Hmm...do you have to blow dry?  I try to avoid blow drying as it can dry the hair out and make it appear thicker and more coarse than it really is.  Normally with my daughter's hair, I part it into six sections and braid it and let it air dry. (I believe some call this a braid out.)  Then I style it after its dry.  My mother did the same to her own hair and to mine as a child.  I notice the braiding helps tame the curl a bit for styling later.  My mother would oil my scalp with hair pomade but I don't really do that.

I've never used Nexus products but it could be possible that it is making your hair and your son's hair seem coarser than it is.  I know some shampoos can make my hair hard.  I know a shampoo is gentle enough for me when I feel I can comb my hair without adding conditioner. I don't go buy price or reputation of any product.  I go by what works for my hair.  People love Pantene but my hair hates it.

Will Bee Mine work for your son's hair?  I can't say for sure but I think for the size and cost of the samples ($5.00) it could be worth trying it out.  I've also found that VO5 shampoo and conditioner help to make my hair soft and pliable and my daughter's hair loves Pantene even though it makes my hair a coarse frizzy ball.

So I guess to sum up I would suggest you try other products besides the Nexus and maybe avoid the blow dryer.  If you have to blow dry in order to style his hair, don't make his hair completely dry.  Leave it a little damp.  I also hear some people prefer to twist damp hair vs. dry.

I would also suggest you check out YouTube for some great tutorials on twisting hair.  I'm sure there will be some product recommendations that may help you.

Whew!  Sorry to be so long-winded.  I hope this helps you and your handsome son!

  1. Thanks for all the tips Danielle. I blow dry his hair to give him the length he craves. Its twice as long blow dried though it doesn't last long and after his skating and sweating it shrinks up. We only blow dry every three weeks and I use the lowest setting for him so I don't think it will hurt. I also put in a lot of products like coconut oil, glycerin, rose water and olive oil before I twist it. I will definitely try to find some other products to wash it. I will also see if I can get some of those Bee Natural samples.
